The Old Silk Route: A Journey Through History and Nature
The Silk Route, or 'Reshom Path' as it's known in Bengali, is a vital part of human history. For centuries, this ancient network of trade routes stretched from China and India to Persia, Arabia, Greece, and Italy, facilitating the exchange of not just silk, but also fruits, vegetables, spices, fabrics, and metals.
Sikkim's very own Silk Route is a significant segment of this historical path, connecting Lhasa and the Chumbi Valley in Tibet to the port of Tamluk, passing through the famous Nathu La Pass.
Why Silk Route ?
Even today, the Sikkim Silk Route is a treasure trove of natural beauty. However, it's a destination best suited for those who want to get up close with the nature. It’s for travelers who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and smells of mountain village. If you dream of gazing at the snow-capped Himalayas in awe, or feeling a shiver of excitement as you stand on the famous Zig Zag Road of Zuluk, a place steeped in history—this is the trip for you. It's a journey for those who want to savor the raw, untouched beauty of nature, beyond the typical tourist viewpoints. In one sentence, if you want to experience clear view of Kanchanjangha, natural forests, natural high altitude lakes, roaring mountain rivers, stay above the clouds, natural green grazing ground, cold desert and last but not the least snow covered high altitude passes Silk Route can be your ultimate destinations because you will never find so much versatility in nature anywhere in such a short tour days.
What should be the duration of the tour ?
If you want a relaxed tour with proper acclimatization so that you and your family members feel good and cherish the tour properly we would recommend for atleast 4 night 5 days plan and if time permits you can increase one more day to make it 5 night 6 days plan. But if time is really short then you can go for 3 night 4 days plan but not recommended for senior citizens.
Whats The Ideal Time to Visit ?
The best time to visit the Silk Route is generally from October to May. This is when the rainy season ends, and the region is at its most beautiful, often with a touch of snow. While it can be very cold, with the possibility of road closures in January and February due to heavy snowfall, this period offers the most spectacular views. October, November and December is the best time for clear sky and best visibility with green covered everywhere. January, February and March are best time for experiencing snow in the Silk Route.
The summer season, from April to June, before the monsoon starts, offers a different experience. The weather is pleasant, and the hills come alive with blooming flowers. This is a great time to visit if you prefer to avoid the intense cold.
It is generally best to avoid the monsoon season, which runs from July to mid-September, as the heavy rains can make travel difficult. Otherwise this route will give you different looks in every different months in a year.
